Seniors and Cannabis

Proven. Safe. Effective. Natural.

At Root 66, we understand many senior citizens believe Cannabis is a drug and not a medicine. There are many misconceptions about Cannabis, especially among senior citizens. At Root 66, it is our goal, through our website and one-on-one or group education, to educate seniors on Cannabis and improve their quality of life.

With extensive knowledge within the Cannabis community, we felt that there were ways we could contribute to the citizens of Illinois. Cannabis has emerged as an alternative treatment for a variety of medical and psychological conditions. For this reason, Illinois has implemented Cannabis Laws and Programs that allow Cannabis use as a medicine to treat conditions normally treated by addicting pharmaceutical drugs.

Seniors Are The Fastest Growing Group Of Cannabis Users In America: Seniors account for only 14 percent of the nation's population, but they use more than 30 percent of all prescription drugs including some highly-addictive painkillers. So Cannabis is fast becoming a pill alternative. Cannabis use is up 53 percent with the 55-and-over community.

A recent report prepared by the World Health Organization states, "There are no recorded cases of overdose fatalities attributed to cannabis, and the estimated lethal dose for humans extrapolated from animal studies is so high that it cannot be achieved." The most common side effects of Cannabis use include coughing, wheezing and bronchitis if Cannabis is smoked. These side effects are easily remedied by the use of a vaporizer or by eating foods prepared with Cannabis. Individuals with certain psychological conditions, cardiovascular problems or with a history of lung dysfunction may experience more adverse side effects and should consult a physician before using Cannabis.

You Do Not Have To Smoke Cannabis: One common misconception among aging adults is that they have to smoke Cannabis to gain the medicinal benefits. Cannabis comes in many forms, including liquid extracts, oils for the control of seizures, infused honey, candies, baked goods, creams and lotions, powders for teas, vaporizers and many others. Cannabis can be added to just about any regular recipe in the form of Cannabis infused butters or oils.

Cannabis Can Reduce/Eliminate Most Prescription Drugs: There are so many elderly who are taking prescription medications with the resulting side effects such as nausea, seizures, and emotional problems. Some senior citizens are being overmedicated due to their physicians prescribing them additional drugs to help with the side effects of their initial prescriptions. But now, doctors, advocates, and the elderly themselves have discovered the wonders of cannabis and what it can do. They are no longer feeling sick and tired and have realized that they can get by with fewer medications or with no narcotics use at all.
